To encourage girls to work together to achieve a common task.
This can be done as a whole group activity, or if your group is large, divide everyone into groups of eight to ten.
Set the task of developing a tableau to depict a machine of their choice. It could be a domestic machine such as a washing machine, or a mode of transport, eg an aeroplane. The only rule is that every member of the group must be a part of the machine and no-one can be the operator.
Allow a few minutes for the groups to discuss and agree roles and the shape they are going to make. Once this is decided upon, they should spend time making the machine ‘work’ for five minutes. The groups can then demonstrate their machines.
Review the process, thinking about who made the decisions? Who kept the group on task? What if anything hindered their progress?
If girls in your group cannot participate in the physical elements of the activity, assign a new role of ‘engineer.’ This person will give the group ideas and provide outside assistance, offering aid to the girls completing the physical task.
