Preparation

Instructions

1.

In groups, ask the girls to list how females are stereotyped in the media, for example:

  • Women doing the cleaning
  • Appearance (slim, perfect hair/nails/teeth etc)
  • Interested in fashion
  • Women looking after the children
  • Women shown as emotional

2.

Hand out a newspaper or magazine to each group and ask the girls to look through for images and descriptions of female stereotypes. Girls are to create a poster with these images and words and write how it makes them feel next to each one.

3.

Explain that we can break stereotypes by getting to know someone and learning to understand how people are all different, with different backgrounds, lifestyles, likes and dislikes and this is not determined by what job they do or where they come from.

4.

Discuss that, as a group, we want to break the female stereotypes in the media and have our voices heard for something we feel strongly about.
